  Reverse (SSH) shells
I know that reverse shells are used by trojans for ages.
http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/ssh_tunnelling.html
has a handy description of this is configured with standard openSSH.
READ: How do I get to log in on machine A from home with SSH, by making A connect to me (rather vice versa).

Fun tools (word doc analysis, file attribute changer)
Just came across two free-for-personal-use fun tools at snapfiles.com

DocScrubber - let's you view and remove hidden (potentially embarassing/revealing) information in .doc files.

Attribute Changer - a nice tool that allows you to change many file attributes, incl. the "modified date".
(I needed this to rectify a digital picture gallery)

Runours of SHA0, SHA1 and MD5 being broken.
I just came across a posting a Dana Epp's blog about rumours of collisions in several hash functions. See more at http://silverstr.ufies.org/blog/archives/000670.html
(also mentions RIPEMD .. which would be bad)
- I think I'll just wait for Bruce Schneier's next cryptogram.
